Causes of Leg Cramps

Doctors and scientsts have not yet been able to discover the exact reason why people suffer with leg cramps.

We do know some common factors that increase the chance of having leg cramps, they include:

  • Muscle fatigue and tiredness

  • Heavy exercising

  • Dehydration, not drinking enough water

  • High body weight, but not necessarily being obese

  • Electrolyte imbalances

  • Medications you are taking

  • Pregnancy

  • Deficiency of magnesium and/or calcium

  • Chronic diseases of the motor neuron can also cause recurrent severe cramps

A severe case of leg cramps may result in tenderness and even muscle fiber necrosis. Necrosis is the localized death of living cells (as from infection or the interruption of blood supply).
